What "ani" means

At Alang, plate thickness is spoken in ani (aani), a sixteenth of an inch. The circular uses it as the plate code: 12ANI is 12 ani plate.

Alang ani codes and plate thickness in mm
4 ani6 mm
6 ani10 mm
8 ani12–16 mm
10 ani16–20 mm

Melting, attachment and rolling material

Melting scrap goes to a furnace to be melted down. Our melting line is MS profile melting scrap: plate skeletons left after gas-cutting circles, dense and paint-free, for casting foundries.

Attachment scrap is sorted MS melting scrap from Alang ship-recycling lots that may carry paint. It goes to induction furnaces making ingots and billets. See MS attachment scrap.

Rolling material is ex-ship MS cut into pieces and graded by piece weight (1/2 kg, 2/5 kg, 5/10 kg) for re-rolling mills that make TMT bars, round bars and flats. See MS rolling material.

Plate is ex-ship MS plate sorted by thickness, bought to cut circles, squares and parts. See MS profile plates.

Why Alang rates move

Alang rates follow supply and demand. Supply depends on the ships being recycled and the material they yield. Demand comes from re-rolling mills, foundries and induction furnaces, and moves with the wider steel and scrap market. On any day, a lot can trade away from the circular figure because of its grade, plate condition, size mix and quantity.
